Original vs Inspired: The Uncomfortable Truth About the Fragrance Industry

Every few months, a new controversy erupts online about "dupe culture" — TikTok videos comparing designer perfumes to their more affordable counterparts, Reddit threads arguing about what counts as "ethical," and no shortage of designer-brand loyalists insisting that anything under ₹5,000 must be inferior. But the conversation is far more complicated — and far more interesting — than a simple "original good, dupe bad" narrative suggests.

Perfumery Has Never Been About Original Ownership of Scent

Here's something the outrage cycle conveniently skips over: you cannot patent a smell. Fragrance formulas can be kept as trade secrets, but the actual scent experience — a combination of naturally occurring and synthetic aromatic molecules — isn't something any single brand can legally "own" the way they own a logo or a brand name.

This is precisely why the fragrance industry has always operated on a spectrum of inspiration. Perfumers study, reference, and reinterpret each other's work constantly — it's an accepted, longstanding norm within the industry itself, not a modern dupe-culture invention. What's changed isn't the practice; it's that consumers can now see it happening in real time, on camera, with side-by-side price comparisons.

The Real Ethical Line Isn't "Inspired vs Not"

The actual point of ethical friction isn't whether a fragrance house creates a scent inspired by another brand's profile — that's business as usual across the entire industry, high-end and affordable alike. The real line is around honesty and transparency:

  • Is the brand being upfront that this is their own formulation, inspired by a scent character, rather than falsely claiming to be the original product?
  • Is the packaging designed to genuinely deceive a customer into thinking they're buying the actual designer brand?
  • Is the brand using disguised or altered trademarks to dodge detection while still implying a false affiliation?

Brands that are transparent about being "inspired by" — clearly labeling their own name, being upfront that they're not affiliated with or endorsed by the original house — are participating in a long-established, legitimate practice. Brands that disguise trademarks or imply false endorsement are the ones actually crossing an ethical (and often legal) line.

Why "More Expensive" Doesn't Automatically Mean "More Ethical"

There's an unspoken assumption in a lot of dupe-shaming discourse: that spending more money is inherently the more principled choice. But designer fragrance pricing, as we've covered elsewhere, is driven overwhelmingly by brand marketing and licensing costs — not necessarily by more ethical sourcing, better labor practices, or superior ingredients across the board. Paying more doesn't automatically mean you're funding something more virtuous; often, you're simply funding a bigger advertising budget.

What Customers Actually Deserve

The real answer isn't "always buy the original" or "always buy the alternative." It's informed choice. A customer deserves to know:

  • Exactly what they're buying (an original formulation inspired by a scent, not a counterfeit)
  • Roughly how it compares in character to what inspired it
  • That there's no false claim of affiliation or endorsement anywhere in the marketing

When that transparency exists, the "original vs inspired" debate stops being a moral question and becomes what it always should have been: a simple consumer choice between two honestly labeled options at two very different price points.

Where We Stand

We believe in being upfront about exactly what we are: a fragrance house that creates our own formulations, inspired by scent profiles people already love, at a fraction of the price — with zero pretense of being the original, and zero disguised trademarks. That's not a loophole. It's just honest business, in an industry that's operated this way for longer than most people realize.
